The Pyramids of Giza

Egypt Monuments

The Pyramids of Giza are the most famous monuments of ancient Egypt. Also there are 3 main Pyramids here, which were built in the 4th Dynasty. The Pyramids of Ancient Egypt were built as tombs for Kings and Queens, and it was the exclusive privilege to have a Pyramid tomb. However there are several, around of 93 Pyramids in Egypt, but the most famous ones are those at Giza.

Great Pyramid of Khufu

The Pyramid of Khufu is by far the most famous Pyramid in Egypt, tallest, the biggest, and most intact. After its construction it became one of the "7 Wonders Of The World", and today, it is the only one of them remaining. For a period of 4300 years, the Pyramid was also the tallest building on earth, until the French built the Eiffel Tower in 1889 to take that accolade. From an entrance just above the base of the Great Pyramid, a cramped Ascending Passage climbs for 36 meters up through the solid stone core to a towering Grand Gallery. This climbs another 46 meters to reach the King's Chamber and the now empty sarcophagus in the heart of this colossal pyramid.

You will find that the entrance of the Pyramid is situated at the northern side, the same as almost every Pyramid in Egypt. On this side there are actually 2 entrances, one is the original, and is 17m (55ft) above ground level, and the other one is a man made forced entrance situated below it.
